Wildcats fall to Texas State, 8-3, during second day of Texas Shootout

Box Score

DENTON, Texas - Freshman Kyla Simmons crushed a fourth-inning two-run home run for her first career round-tripper during Friday's 8-3 loss to Texas State at the Texas Shootout.

Simmons' one-out shot off Ashley Wright (2-0) at North Texas' Lovelace Field was just one of three hits for the Wildcats (2-7) on the afternoon as they were forced once again to play from behind after the Bobcats tallied one run in the first inning and seven more between the second and third innings.

Senior Peyton Mosely (0-2) started for the Wildcats and was charged with six runs - three earned - on five hits and four walks over 2.1 innings. Junior Emily Seidel then took over halfway through the third inning and surrendered two additional runs before holding Texas State scoreless over the final three innings with two strikeouts.

Texas State started Kaylee Garner, but she only lasted 2.1 innings after walking two of the first three batters she faced in the third. Kaylee Crozier drew a walk to begin the frame, went to second on a fielder's choice and to third on a wild pitch.

Garner then walked Madison Buckley, which forced the Bobcats to turn to their bullpen. Wright got a ground ball on a 2-1 pitch to freshman Taylor Brown, but the shortstop booted it to allow Crozier to score an unearned run.

Senior Lyndi Smith then came to the plate with two aboard and her team trailing 4-1, but Wright got her to end the threat with an infield fly ball.

The Bobcats (10-4) answered the Wildcats' run with four in the third inning to help put the game away even though Simmons' homer made it an 8-3 ball game with 3.5 frames left to play. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, they were unable to string together some late-inning scoring threats as they did last night vs. North Texas.

The Wildcats return to action Saturday with a doubleheader against Southland Conference rivals Sam Houston State (9 a.m.) and Stephen F. Austin (1 p.m.)

ACU's Sunday Shootout opponent will be determined by tomorrow's results.
