Red Raider Open Meet Program
ABILENE – Abilene Christian's men's and women's cross country teams visit Lubbock's Meadowbrook Golf Course Friday evening for the annual Red Raider Open. Races begin at 5:30 p.m. with the women's 5K immediately followed by the men's 8K.
Competition for the Red Raiders and Wildcats includes teams from Clarendon College, Eastern New Mexico, Lubbock Christian, New Mexico Highlands, New Mexico Junior College, New Mexico Military, Odessa College, Oral Roberts, Ranger College, South Plains College, Texas-Permian Basin, Wayland Baptist, West Texas A&M and Western Texas College.
ACU competed against many of these same schools during last Saturday's season opener at the McMurry/Bill Libby Invitational. South Plains College swept the top three spots at Grover Nelson Park in coasting to a first-place total of 16 points, while Texas Wesleyan won the women's team title over ACU by 18 points, 27-45.
The Wildcats were led to the finish line by senior all-America Chloe Susset, who beat the rest of the 73-woman field by nearly 24 seconds with a time of 18:07.22. Her performance earned her the Southland Conference's Cross Country Runner of the Week award.
ACU also received a pair of top-10 showings from freshmen Diana García Muñoz (19:03.36) and Madeline Jordan (19:23.98), while newcomers Michaela Hackett (20:17.53) and Landa Dowdy (20:31.66) each cracked the top 20.
On the men's side, ACU entered just six of its runners and placed fourth in a seven-team field behind South Plains, McMurry and Texas-Permian Basin. Senior Erik Forrister recorded a top-10 showing with an 8K time of 26:53.81 and junior transfer Daniel Block – known more as a 400m and 800m runner – placed 12th in 27:15.02.
2012 NCAA Cross Country Champion and still unbeaten Kennedy Kithuka leads Texas Tech on the men's side. He enters tonight's race as the course record holder after finishing first overall in last season's 8K with a time of 23:38.44.
The Lady Raiders enter the meet after taking three of the top-five places in Rudioso, N.M. on their way to a first place finish. Newcomer Jocelyn Caro finished second overall to lead her squad with a time of 18:08.50.
Caroline Jepleting of New Mexico JC set the women's course record of 17:14.30 in 2009.
