ABILENE – Abilene Christian's nationally third-ranked tennis team recorded a pair of shutout victories Saturday in Kingsville, beating Laredo Junior College and the host Javelinas by a combined score of 15-0.
The dual victories raised the Wildcats' season record to 10-3 and snapped a two-game losing streak, which included losses to Kentucky and No. 4 Barry. They also served as a sort of warm-up for tomorrow's big Lone Star Conference match at No. 33 Incarnate Word. The Cardinals are 5-4 and last week defeated St. Edward's 7-2 before being shut out by the Buccaneers.
The Wildcats began their morning with a 6-0 win vs. Laredo, which is carrying only four individuals on its roster. ACU responded by moving all its singles players up several spots and using two new doubles combinations:
Julia Mongin and
Micah Hermsdorf, and
Kaysie Hermsdorf and
Nada Marjanovic. Both tandems won by matching 8-1 scores.
Senior
Laura Mongin and sophomore
Brittney Reed were the lone Wildcats to play singles in both duals and went a combined 4-0. Mongin pushed her team-best winning streak to nine with a 6-3, 6-1 decision at No. 1 over LJC's Bianca Gonzalez followed by her win at No. 3 vs. Kingsville's Tabata Lua Cervantes, 6-4, 6-1.
Reed, meanwhile, surrendered just one point between her matches at No. 2 vs. Laredo's Rebecca Delgado and at No. 4 vs. Javelina Victoria Rios.
Elsewhere in singles, Wildcats
Emily Conrad,
Jamie Lee Denton and
Kaysie Hermsdorf all won their sixth matches of the season, while
Nada Marjanovic improved to 7-3 following her win at No. 6 vs. Kingsville's Alexandra Carrillo, 6-1, 6-0.
All-Americas
Julia Mongin and
Micah Hermsdorf were each winners in singles and doubles against the Javelinas. Mongin first teamed with Reed to beat Marija Dimitrovska and Maria Herrera, 8-5, and beat Herrera again at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-2.
Hermsdorf's wins came at both No. 2 positions, first with
Hannah Kelley vs. Rios and Cervantes, 8-1, and then against Dimitrovska, 6-0, 6-2.
Conrad and Denton won their fifth straight doubles match to start the season after beating the No. 3 Kingsville team of Alexandra Carrillo and Ashton Garcia, 8-0.
For the season, ACU's singles players are now a combined 59-16 (.787) and its doubles teams are 32-4 (.889).
