ABILENE - Abilene Christian's nationally third-ranked women's tennis team posted a pair of lopsided wins indoors Saturday at the Eager Tennis Pavilion, defeating South Central Regional foe Oklahoma Christian, 8-1, and the No. 15 NCAA Division-III team from Trinity University, 9-0.
The doubleheader sweep improved ACU's season record to 4-1. OCU fell to 2-1 with the loss, while Trinity dropped to 1-2.
The Wildcats today won all six doubles matches while using six different combinations, and captured all but one of the 12 singles matches as 20th-ranked Barbora Bozkova of OCU defeated No. 5
Julia Mongin at No. 1.
Mongin defeated Bozkova - a former junior college champion at Laredo - during last fall's USTA/ITA regional tournament, but could not do so again today. Mongin lost the first set 6-1, but then recorded a brilliant comeback effort in the second set, as she rallied all the way back to tie the score at 5-5 and 6-6 after being down 5-1. Mongin went on to win the set 7-6 (4), but lost the supertiebreaker, 10-5.
Mongin, however, defeated Bozkova and Angie Torres earlier at No. 1 doubles with partner
Brittney Reed, 8-5, to complete the first of two ACU doubles sweeps. Also beating the Eagles in doubles were the 14th-ranked all-America team of
Micah Hermsdorf and
Hannah Kelley and the third-position combination of
Kaysie Hermsdorf and
Laura Mongin.
ACU doubles teams have so far combined for a 13-2 record (.867) through their five matches.
Even though
Julia Mongin lost at No. 1, her teammates more than picked her up as they went on to capture five straight-set wins from the No. 2 to 6 positions. No. 32
Micah Hermsdorf made it a 4-0 game with her win at No. 2 over Gisela Castany, 6-2, 6-0, and then Reed clinched it at No. 3 with her 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Maryfer Abreu Roman.
Laura Mongin,
Nada Marjanovic and
Hannah Kelley later defeated the Eagles at the No. 4, 5 and 6 positions, respectively.
The ACU coaching staff rested several starters vs. Trinity, but the result was nearly indentical as the Wildcats posted their second 9-0 shutout of the season.
Laura Mongin won her first match of the year at No. 1, as did Reed at No. 2 and Kelley at No. 3.
Kaysie Hermsdorf,
Emily Conrad and
Jamie Lee Denton, meanwhile, all improved to 2-0 at the No. 4 to 6 positions.
Reed's and Hermsdorf's wins at 2 and 4 vs. Trinity were complete-set shutouts.
