SAN ANGELO – The ACU men's basketball team continues its 10-game season-opening road swing this weekend with two games at the San Angelo Community Medical Center Classic hosted by Angelo State.
The Wildcats (0-5) will play NCAA Division II member Western New Mexico at 5 p.m. Friday at the Junell Center, and will then play NAIA member Northern New Mexico College at 5 p.m. Saturday. The Wildcats will return to Abilene late Saturday night and then fly out Sunday morning to Cincinnati where they will play Xavier on Monday at 6 p.m. (Abilene time).
No radio or television coverage will be provided for ACU's two games in San Angelo, but the Monday game at Xavier will be broadcast locally on 98.1 FM (on the internet at
the98x.com) and will be broadcast to a national television audience on Fox Sports 1 (channel 258 on Abilene Suddenlink cable).
The Wildcats have played the 77th-toughest schedule in NCAA Division I basketball so far this season, and they have an 0-5 record to show for it, albeit those losses have been to Duquesne, St. Bonaventure, Maryland, Iowa and TCU.
ACU – which is averaging just 54.2 points per game offensively – is led in scoring by junior guard
Harrison Hawkins at 12.8 points per game. Junior guard
LaDarrien Williams is the only other Wildcat in double figures in points scored at 10.0 per game. Sophomore forward
Austin Cooke is averaging 8.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per game for the Wildcats.
WNMU (0-1) last played on Nov. 16 in an exhibition at Grand Canyon with the Lopes winning, 91-41. The last regular season game took place on Nov. 14 at Northern New Mexico with the Eagles taking the 75-62 victory. In that game, Brelan Berry led the way with 17 points and four rebounds. Steven Loucks and C.J. Grigg also scored in double figures with Loucks going for 12 and Grigg scoring 10.
Northern New Mexico is 4-2 on the season with wins over NCAA Division II programs in Fort Lewis (Colo.), Western State (Colo.) and Western New Mexico. The Eagles are led by guard Matthew Brito at 16.2 ppg, while forward A.J. Peralta is averaging 10.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.
Northern New Mexico will play Angelo State at 7 p.m. Friday night before taking on ACU at 5 p.m. Saturday.
