FRISCO, Texas – Seniors Chloe Susset of Abilene Christian and Matt Perri of Houston Baptist Tuesday were named the Southland Conference Cross Country Men's and Women's Athletes of the Week.
Perri and Susset have each been honored twice this season by the conference. Perri won his first citation on Sept. 10, while Susset captured hers a week later after winning the season-opening 5K at the Bill Libby/McMurry Invitational in 18:07.22.
This past Saturday, Susset won the 6K UIW Cardinal Invitational in 22:30.48 , which was her second win of the fall and fourth-consecutive top-15 finish. Her Wildcats finished third as a team with 58 points behind co-champions UIW and UT-Brownsville, which tied for first with 39 points.
Susset's competition for this week's award included Hiba Kreidie of Houston Baptist, Irma Garza of Incarnate Word, Tessni Carruthers of Nicholls and Ann-Kathrin Ott and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Garza was seventh at her team's invitational with a time of 23:24.11.
In being named the men's runner of the week, Perri won his third straight HBU Invitational title on Friday with a 5K time of 15:04 to propel the Huskies to a second-place finish. The Tomball, Texas, native outkicked Jesus Esparza and Jose Esparza of Tec de Monterrey during the last 500 meters for the victory.
Each school's sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
Susset and the Wildcats return to action Saturday for the Indiana State Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind. Races begin at 11 a.m. and include three separate 8K's for the men and three 6K's for the women.
ACU will be one of 75 entries on the men's side, and one of 86 on the women's side. The Wildcats' roster will feature Susset, Chad Caton, Daniel Block, Erik Forrister, Diana García Muñoz, Landa Dowdy, Michaela Hackett and Kim Lamadrid.
