SOUTHLAKE, Texas - Abilene Christian's 16th-ranked men's tennis team earned the right to compete for a fourth-consecutive Lone Star Conference Championship title after surviving a hard-fought 5-2 battle against Cameron in tournament semifinal action Friday afternoon at the Southlake Tennis Center.
ACU will next play the winner of the Midwestern State and Incarnate Word match Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
All three doubles matches between the conference's No. 1 and 4 seeds were decided by four points or less, but the Wildcats held on at two positions and entered singles with a 2-1 lead. ACU's nationally ranked duo of
Hans Hach and
Nick Plum defeated Mateus Campos and Nicolai Ferrigno at No. 1, 8-5, and then the No. 2 combo of Borja Cortes and
Alfredo Desiati edged Thomas Peixoto and Gonzalo Garzon, 8-6.
Hach and Plum also won at No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, to push the Wildcats' lead to 4-1. Hach, the sixth-ranked singles player in DII, beat Peixoto at the top line, 6-3, 7-6, while Plum captured a 6-4, 6-4 victory vs. Duje Janjic.
Freshman Borja Cortes clinched the match after rallying to beat Jorge Gerosi, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Cameron earned its second and final point of the dual when Ferrigno came back against Desiati, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.
