LUBBOCK, Texas – Abilene Christian junior Amanda Ouedraogo is headed to the NCAA Championships after winning the triple jump title Saturday at the Texas Tech Open with an automatic qualifying mark of 12.48 meters (40 feet - 11.50 inches).
Ouedraogo is ACU's second NCAA qualifier in as many meets this season, joining senior
Nick Jones, who qualified in the shot put at December's Air Force Blue Silver Open. Jones' throw traveled 18.24m (59-10.25).
Ouedraogo recorded the winning leap on her third attempt after posting no distance on her first try followed by a mark of 12.14m. Ernestine Cray of Texas A&M-CC led Ouedraogo after her second-round jump of 12.37m, but couldn't surpass that effort through her next four tries.
ACU juniors Jordan Geary and Dennis Bain, and freshman Lexus Williams were among the Wildcats who added their names to the NCAA provisional lists along with both the men's and women's 4x400m relays. Geary ran an altitude-adjusted – and personal best - 49.00 (48.39) seconds in the 400m, while in the 60m hurdles, Bain and Williams, recorded respective times of 8.18 (7.63) and 8.78 (8.19).
Led by a terrific anchor leg by Karla Hope, the women's 4x400m relay posted a provisional time of 3:54.61 (3:52.57). Cassie Brooks, Shennae Steele and Ayesha Rumble joined Hope on the relay.
The men's 4x400m relay finished its course with a provisional mark of 3:18.38 (3:15.94) and was comprised of Paris Robertson, Osei Alleyne Forte, Banjo Jaiyesimi and Geary. Geary momentarily lost the lead while running anchor only to regain it and give ACU a second-section victory.
During Friday's action, both Geary and Robertson clocked personal records of 21.80 and 21.92 in the 200m, while in the long jump Levance Williams finished second with a leap of 7.48m (24-6.5), which was only 2.75 inches off the automatic mark. Parker Petty also registered a personal best in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.89m (6-2.25)
The women's distance medley finished second in a 12:27.06, which is 10 seconds off the provisional mark and 21 seconds faster than anything it ran last year. The men's DMR posted a 45-second improvement over last year's best result with a third-place time of 10:16.83.
Steele ran a 25.11 in the 200m, placing her eighth out of 74 competitors.
ACU Track and Field returns to action later this week for a pair of meets as one group of Wildcats will head back to Colorado Springs for the Air Force Combined Events, with the rest venturing to Albuquerque for the New Mexico Invitational.
