Wildcats lose lead, game at ASU

SAN ANGELO – The ACU Wildcats had hoped to use last Tuesday's win over Angelo State as a springboard into a run at reaching the Lone Star Conference Post-Season Tournament.

But the Rams avenged that 15-point loss Saturday night with a 65-59 win over the Wildcats in an LSC men's basketball game at the Junell Center on the ASU campus.

The loss drops the Wildcats to 8-10 overall and 2-8 in the LSC, while the Rams improve to 8-11 and 2-8.  ACU will be back in action Thursday when it hosts Paul Quinn College in a non-conference game at Moody Coliseum.

The Rams – who shot a blistering 57.7 percent (15 of 26) from the field in the second half – rallied from as much as a seven-point deficit early in the second half to tie the game at 52-52 on a pair of Keenen Coleman free throws with 4:14 to play.

ACU missed its next four straight shots and a free throw while the Rams ran off seven straight points to grab a 59-52 lead with 1:27 to play.  That 7-0 spurt was capped by a 3-pointer from LaDonn Huckay , who finished with 10 points off the bench.

The Wildcats never got closer than four points the rest of the way as turnovers and cold shooting cost them in the closing minutes of play.

Kendall Durant led the Wildcats with 17 points, while Antonio Bell had 14 points.
