ABILENE – The Abilene Christian women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss to #17 West Texas A&M Thursday night at Moody Coliseum, dropping its season and conference records to .500 at 7-7 and 3-3.
The Lady Buffs, however, continued their roll in improving to 12-1 overall and 6-1 vs. the Lone Star Conference.
Neither side was particularly efficient on offense until the third set when West Texas A&M hit .344 to lift its overall hitting percentage to .225. ACU hit .164 behind 21 attacking errors plus three additional miscues from the service line.
Lady Buff Ashley Davis led all players with 11 kills, while
Kalynne Allen and
Sara Oxford shared the Wildcat lead with 10. Other numbers of note included 31 assists by West Texas A&M's Lacy Hayes and three solo blocks (five total) for Wildcat
Neely Borger.
ACU jumped out to a 12-6 lead in set one, but the Lady Buffs stormed back behind six consecutive points off several kills and an ace from Stormi Lancaster, which knotted it at 14-14. The two sides encountered eight more ties all the way through 24-24 from where Davis delivered the go-ahead and set points off assists from Hayes.
West Texas A&M built off its momentum from the first set with a 12-3 run to start the second, during which it benefitted from six Wildcat errors. ACU then made its own push to climb back to within one point at 14-13 following a service ace by
Jennie Hutt.
Three more ACU attacking errors on four possessions late in the set pushed the Lady Buffs past the 20-point threshold, but the Wildcats refused to falter and scored four straight points to get within a point at 21-20. Unfortunately, that's as close as ACU would get as the Lady Buffs scored the final four points, including an ace from Hayes.
The third set started as a seesaw battle, but Texas A&M went on an 11-3 run to put it firmly out of reach after ACU tied it at 10-10. Sarah Martin clinched the match with her sixth kill.
The Wildcats return to Moody Coliseum Saturday for a 2 p.m. match vs. Eastern New Mexico.
