ASU Finishes Sweep of Wildcats

SAN ANGELO – Troubles continued for the ACU softball squad at No. 17 Angelo State as they were swept by the Rambelles on Friday, 9-1 and 4-3 at the ASU Softball Complex in Lone Star Conference South Division action as Angelo State took all three games from the Wildcats for the first time since a sweep in 2004.
ACU who took last year's series in Abilene for the first time since 2005 dropped all three games to the Rambelles to fall to 26-26 on the year and 9-9in the LSC South. Angelo State holds the top spot in the South Division at 14-4 and improved to 39-8 overall.
In the nightcap Brittany Astle blasted a home run to centerfield to break a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth and gave ASU a three game sweep of the Wildcats.
Brittany Rexroat was dealt the loss as she allowed three runs in four innings of work as she continued to be efficient in the circle allowing no walks. Although the Wildcats would battle back to plate two runs in the top half of the fifth inning it would not be enough.
Clarissa Molina was outstanding for the second straight down setting ACU down in order in the seventh to preserve the win. Molina scattered eight hits for a complete game win walking none and striking out three.
Game one was all Angelo State as the 17th-ranked team in the country pounded nine runs on seven hits and took advantage of five errors by ACU. The five errors was two shy of a school record.
Missy Mendoza recorded three more hits on the day including a 2-for-3 performance in game two with a double giving her 78 hits on the season and 16 doubles. She is now eight hits shy of the single season mark and five doubles shy of the single season record as well.
The Wildcats still sit in third place now tied with Texas Woman's at 9-9 respectively, however the Pioneers hold the tiebreaker over ACU. ACU will return home needing a sweep of Tarleton State and help to now earn a spot in next month's Lone Star Conference tournament in Durant, Oklahoma. ACU and TSU will open a three game series on Friday night at 7 p.m. and finish with a double-header on Saturday.
