Wildcats' winning streak ends

SAN ANGELO – The ACU Wildcats shot just 32 percent from the field and made just one 3-pointer Saturday night as they saw their three-game Lone Star Conference South Division winning streak come to an end with a 67-63 loss to Angelo State in women's basketball action at the Junell Center.

The loss drops the Wildcats into a tie with Angelo State for third place in the LSC South.  The Wildcats are now 7-12 overall and 4-3 in the LSC South, while the Rambelles improve to 11-8 and 4-3.

The two teams won't have much time to dwell on Saturday night's game because they play again Monday at 5:30 p.m. at ACU's Moody Coliseum.  Saturday night's game is the first in a busy stretch that will see the Wildcats play three games in five days against Angelo State (Saturday and Monday) and West Texas A&M (Wednesday night in Abilene).

The Wildcats simply couldn't generate much offense as they hit just 20 of 62 shots from the field (32.3 percent), including just 1 of 14 from 3-point range (0.71 percent).

Angelo State wasn't much better, hitting just 23 of 53 shots from the floor (43.4 percent), but the Rambelles did connect on 6 of 11 from 3-point range (54.5 percent).  ASU's two leading scorers, Camille Perkins and Paige Weishuhn, combined to connect on 14 of 27 shots from the floor and score 42 of the Rambelles' 67 points.

ACU, meanwhile, had just one player in double figures as freshman Mack Lankford continued to play well as she scored a team-high 22 points for the Wildcats.

Weishuhn, in fact, nailed a 3-pointer at the 14:42 mark of the first half to give the Rambelles a 12-10 lead, an advantage they would not lose the rest of the way.

Angelo State's advantage would grow to as much as 15 points (62-47) with 7:52 left in the game on a Perkins layup before ACU finished the game with a 16-5 run to cut the final deficit to four points.
