ABILENE – Abilene Christian's Brie Buschman, Andrea Carpenter, Julie Coppedge, Whitley Lindholm and Lyndsey Womack were named Friday to the Capital One Academic All-District 6 first team for women's soccer. The teams are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) to recognize the top student-athletes in the nation for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
As first team selections, this group will advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first, second and third team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
Junior forward Krysta Grimm, who provided an assist during Friday's Lone Star Conference Championship semifinal win over A&M-Commerce, also was honored with a spot on the Academic All-District 6 second team. Grimm, a communication disorders major, is the team's second-leading scorer with 22 points on nine goals and four assists.
Wednesday night Grimm was one of four Wildcats voted onto the conference's All-Academic team with Coppedge, Carpenter and Buschman. Coppedge, a junior midfielder, received additional recognition as the LSC's Academic Player of the Year, boasting a 3.94 GPA while studying advertising and public relations.
Buschman, a first team all-conference defender, has started all 40 matches since joining the Wildcats in 2010, helping them post an overall record of 35-3-2 with 21 shutouts. The ACU defense is among the best in the nation this season, carrying a 0.52 goals-against average and 10.5 shots allowed per match into Sunday's conference championship match vs. Midwestern State.
Buschman is a communications major with a 4.0 GPA and has made the school's Dean List in addition to being a member of the Phi Eta Sigma Academic Club.
Carpenter, a sophomore majoring in elementary education, has added two academic awards this week to a trophy case that already includes two LSC Offensive Player of the Week certificates, a spot on the 2010 Daktronics All-America third-team and the honor of being named the South Central Region's Player of the Year as freshman.
Carpenter scored an ACU program record 22 goals as a rookie and has tallied 14 more this season, including two in today's 2-0 win over A&M-Commerce. Her 79 points are the most scored by any individual in the five-year history of the Wildcats' soccer team.
Lindholm is tied for third on the team with Ashley Holton with 13 points, scoring five goals through 19 matches. She scored her first goal in September at Central Oklahoma and then added two in a 4-2 comeback win vs. Texas Woman's.
Academically, Lindholm made Dean's List following a freshman year in which she posted a 3.88 GPA while studying management.
Womack graduated cum laude in the spring of 2011 with a bachelor's degree in youth and family ministry and is now continuing her studies as a first semester grad student.
A two-time LSC Commissioner's Honor Roll selection, Womack has contributed seven points (1 goal, 5 assists) from the back line through 15 matches this year, raising her career total to 49. She made the all-LSC honorable mention list as a sophomore in 2008 before moving up to the all-south central region and conference second teams in 2009 as a forward.
