LAWTON, Okla. – The Abilene Christian volleyball team continued its dominance over Cameron Saturday afternoon at the Aggie Gym, winning 3-1 by scores of 25-20, 25-20, 19-25 and 25-18.
The Aggies dropped to 10-8 (4-6 Lone Star Conference) with the loss as their winless streak against ACU was extended to an eighth season. The Wildcats, meanwhile, improved to 11-10 and 5-4 in the conference, keeping them in a fourth-place tie with Texas Woman's.
There were no standout players today for ACU in a statistical sense as all the team's offensive and defensive duties appeared evenly distributed. The lone exception was
Haley Rhoads setting up 43 of the team's 47 assists, but elsewhere there were four Wildcats with 10 or more kills, five had at least two blocks, while several more had seven or more digs.
The Wildcats produced a sharp .277 hitting percentage as they committed just 17 errors through 130 attempts. By comparison, Cameron was plagued by 29 miscues that lowered its percentage to .178. The Aggies hit very well during their third-set win (.519) but bookended that performance with a combined 17 errors through sets two and four.
ACU led from start to finish in the first set and at one point held a 6-1 lead following consecutive unforced errors by the Aggies. However, Cameron would creep back to knot the set at 13-13 and again at 18-18 before ACU finished on a 7-2 run.
Kalynne Allen and
Sara Oxford delivered key points down the stretch as they finished with 10 and 11 kills, respectively.
The second set played out quite similarly as ACU watched an early big lead disappear before recovering in time to win. With the second set tied at 19-19, the Wildcats scored the next four points on a bad serve, two Kelle Carver attacking errors and a kill from Borger. Cameron would get back within three at 23-20, but then Hutt delivered a kill to bring the serve back to ACU and Borger clinched it with one of her three aces.
Hutt finished the match with eight kills. Borger recorded 12 kills in addition to playing a role on six blocks.
ACU broke a 3-3 tie in the fourth set with an 8-2 run, during which the Aggies made three straight errors before their coaches called a time out. Shortly afterward, however, Cameron responded with strong showings from Carver and Sarah Corbett that helped get the home team back within three at 16-13. But from there ACU would score five of the next eight points and ended the match on a 3-0 run. Carver scored the last two points for ACU on her errors.
ACU was stung hard at the start of the third set and at one point trailed by as many as nine points (20-11) before finishing strong with three consecutive kills from Oxford and
Rachel Riley.
The Wildcats return to action at home Tuesday night with a 7 p.m. match vs. A&M-Kingsville, who they defeated earlier this season 3-2 in comeback fashion.
ACU volleyball fans that join or are already part of the SideOut Club are invited to meet the Wildcats after the game and enjoy a free postgame meal catered by Buffalo Wild Wings. The social will take place in room 132 of Moody Coliseum.
