USTA/ITA National Small College Championships Central
MOBILE, Ala. – Abilene Christian's
Hans Hach and
Julia Mongin each advanced to the semifinals of their respective brackets following convincing first-round wins Thursday at the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships.
Hach blanked Yevhan Zakharov of BYU-Hawai'i, 6-0, 6-0, while Mongin topped Nebraska-Kearney's Vanessa Gunawan, 6-1, 6-2. Both second-seeded Wildcats return to action Friday morning with Hach battling No. 3 seed Daniele Piludu of Concordia (N.Y.) and Mongin taking on third-seeded Barbora Krickova of Armstrong Atlantic.
The ACU doubles team of
Hannah Kelley and
Micah Hermsdorf went 1-1 yesterday and will next play in the third-place match slated for Friday at 3 p.m. The Wildcat duo began its run with an (1-6, 6-3, 10-4) upset victory over second-seeded Ioana Ivan and Sabine Krause of Lynn University, but was then eliminated in the semifinals by the BYU-Hawai'i duo of Annie Hwang and Sherry Liu, 6-2, 6-2.
“It was a great day overall with three wins and one loss,” head coach
Hutton Jones said. “Everyone won in the first round. Our doubles team had a great comeback, but then lost to a real strong BYU-Hawai'i team that I think is going to win the whole thing.”
Kelley's and Hermsdorf's next opponents are Lewis University's Zsofia Kranczicki and Zsofia Lanstiak.
