DENTON –
Shawna Hines and
Neely Borger led the ACU defense propelling the Wildcats to a 3-1 victory over Texas Women's Thursday night in Lone Star Conference action. The tandem produced 14 blocks between them helping ACU move to 9-2 overall and 3-0 while the Pioneers fell to 3-8 and 1-2 in conference play.
On a night when the ACU offense struggled the Wildcat defense picked up the slack led by Hines and Borger. Hines narrowly missed a double-double with eight blocks and 12 kills accounting for 16.5 points. Borger, a freshmen, had a season high 10 kills and just missed a high in blocks with six, while hitting .769 with no errors. She also added 17 points for the Wildcats a team high on the night.
Three Wildcats recorded double figure digs, junior
Kelsie Edwards, and seniors IJ Moronu and
Jordan Schilling. Moronu recorded her seventh double-double with 25 digs and 33 assists while Edwards added 17 digs. Schilling had 10 kills while adding 8 kills and 11 points for the Wildcats.
ACU and TWU split the first two sets 25-19 and 23-25 before the Wildcats finished off the Pioneers 25-20, and 25-21 for the win.
The Wildcats came from behind in the fourth set after the Pioneers took a 14-13 lead. A block by Moronu and Hines would give the Wildcats serve and seven straight points. Schilling would serve the points allowing ACU to rally and never lose the lead.
The win moves the ACU win streak to eight games as they continue conference play on Saturday at Texas A&M-Commerce. The Wildcats and Lions are scheduled for a 2 p.m. tipoff in Commerce, before the Wildcats finish their non-conference slate next weekend at the Washburn Regional Crossover.
