ABILENE -- Tarleton State outscored ACU 17-7 over the final 5:25 of the game Tuesday night and the Texans went on to knock off ACU 70-60 in a Lone Star Conference South Division men's basketball game at Kimbrell Arena.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 8-16 overall and 1-8 in the division, while Tarleton remains atop the division at 20-5 and 8-2. ACU will be back in action Saturday at 8 p.m. when it takes on nationally ranked Midwestern State in Wichita Falls.
The Wildcats scored nine straight points to rally from a 53-44 deficit to tie the score at 53-53 on an
Eddie Thompson bucket with 6:13 to play.
But Devon Hills answered with a three-point play with 5:25 to play to put the Texans back on top 56-53 and Tarleton would never trail the rest of the way. Effran Bryant followed with a 3-pointer with 5:02 to play, followed by a Bryant layup with 4:14 to play to make it 61-53.
Hills hit a pair of free throws with 3:$2 to play to make it 63-54 and essentially put the game on ice for the Texans.
Thompson led the Wildcats with 12 points, while
Ben Warton had 10, while
Giordan Cole had eight points and seven rebounds.
