AUSTIN – St. Edward's outscored ACU 7-0 in the final 23 seconds of the game to pull out a 64-59 win over the Wildcats in the final game of the St. Edward's Shootout at the Recreation and Convocation Center.
The Wildcats are 0-2 on the season and will play their home-opener Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. when they host Texas-Permian Basin.
ACU led 59-57 with 26 seconds left after
Renata Marquez hit a pair of free throws to break a 57-all tie. But just three seconds later, Haley Tidwell nailed a 3-pointer to give the Hilltoppers a 60-59 lead, an advantage it wouldn't relinquish the rest of the game.
After a
Cecilee Perez turnover and Marquez foul with 16 seconds left, Brittany Ward hit a pair of free throws to make it a 62-59 game. ACU called timeout with seven seconds left, but Perez missed a game-tying 3-pointer with four seconds left.
Shelby Shipley fouled Haley Tidwell in the scramble for the loose ball, and Tidwell knocked down two more free throws with one tick left for the final margin.
The Wildcats shot just 36.4 percent from the field in the game (20 of 55), including 8 of 26 in the first half. The Wildcats also cost themselves at the free throw line where they hit just 18 of 30 charity shots. And one day after committing 25 turnovers in a loss to Hillsdale, the Wildcats committed 31 more in the loss to St. Edward's.
Senior guard
Autumn Whitaker led the Wildcats with 16 points and was named to the all-tournament team.
Kelsey Smith had 13 points, while Marquez had 13 off the bench.
