
Wildcats ranked 17th in nation

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- The ACU Wildcats will start the 2010 softball season ranked No. 17 in the nation, according to the National Fastpitch Coaches' Association NCAA Division II pre-season poll.
The Wildcats last season set a program-record with 43 wins en route to a 43-15 season. ACU won the Lone Star Conference South Division and finished as the runner-up at the LSC Post-Season Tournament for the third time in the last four years.
Defending LSC and NCAA Division II South Central Region champion Angelo State is ranked No. 19 in the pre-season poll, while West Texas A&M is tied for 22nd in the poll.
Defending national runner-up Alabama-Huntsville picked up 14 first-place votes and 398 total points to claim the No. 1 spot in the pre-season poll. North Georgia is No. 2 in the pre-season poll, followed by Winona State (Minn.) at No. 3, Dixie State (Utah) at No. 4 and Indianapolis at No. 5.
Defending national champion Lock Haven (Pa.) picked up one first-place vote, but only 58 total points and is ranked No. 25 in the pre-season poll.
Besides ACU, Angelo State and West Texas A&M, the other NCAA Division II South Central Region teams ranked in the poll are No. 8 Missouri Western and No. 12 Nebraska-Omaha.
The Wildcats return starting third baseman Nancy Sawyers and centerfielder Caitlin Nabors, as well as starting pitcher Jacque Gregoire.
ACU will get the season started next weekend at the St. Mary's Classic in San Antonio.
