ABILENE – ACU head volleyball coach Kellen Mock announced recently that she has signed four high school players to binding national letters-of-intent, including two players that just helped Amarillo High School win its fourth straight Class 5A state championship.
Outside hitter Madelyn Robinett and middle blocker Neely Borger were each two-year starters for the Sandies of Amarillo High and were major contributors to a pair of state championship teams. Also signing with the Wildcats were Llano High School middle blocker Allie Rostron and middle blocker Whitney Stevens of Lovejoy High School, which just won its second straight Class 3A state title.
Robinett had 14 kills in the state championship victory over Austin Westlake, including the match-winning kill as the Sandies rallied from a 14-13 deficit in the fifth set to win 16-14. Robinett was voted to the all-tournament team in San Marcos after the victory. She also served as a team captain in 2009 and was an all-District 2-5A selection as a junior.
Borger had four kills and 2.5 total blocks in the state title match, helping the Sandies finish the season 48-3. Borger was also a first team all-District 2-5A selection as she helped the Sandies win the district championship.
Stevens helped Lovejoy finish 43-7 in 2009 with all of their losses coming against Class 5A and 4A opponents. Prior to playing for Lovejoy, she was a freshman starter at West Orange High School in Orlando, Fla. She was born in Papillion, Neb., the hometown of current ACU standout
Jennie Hutt. Stevens played in the Junior Olympics in 2008 prior to earning honorable mention all-District 13-3A honors as a junior. She was a second team all-district selection in 2009.
Rostron was the co-MVP of District 8-3A in 2009 after earning first team all-district honors in 2008 and Newcomer of the Year honors in 2007. In three seasons, she racked up 1,253 kills, 159 blocks, 403 digs and more than 40 service aces.
