ACU drops another close one

ABILENE -- Dernodo Eiland hit two free throws with one second left as Cameron broke ACU's hearts Thursday night with a 58-57 win over the Wildcats in a Lone Star Conference men's crossover basketball game at Moody Coliseum.

The Wildcats' second straight loss dropped them to 3-2 on the season, while Cameron remained unbeaten at 5-0.  ACU will be back in action  Saturday at 4 p.m. when it takes on Southwestern Oklahoma State at Moody Coliseum.

The Wildcats went more than six minutes without scoring down the stretch before Dustin Heiman hit a 15-foot jumper with 54 seconds left to draw the Wildcats to within 54-53.  After a Milton Garner turnover, Heiman buried another jumper to give the Wildcats a 55-54 lead with 21 seconds to play.

But Garner answered with six seconds left as he hit a 10-foot jumper to put the Aggies back on top, 56-55.  ACU's Preston Davis, however, took the inbounds pass and drove the length of the floor and put a layup that dropped off the rim.  Davis, however, was fouled by Jacquez Williams, giving Davis a chance to either tie the game or put the Wildcats in the lead.

Davis calmly drained both free throws with 1.07 seconds to play to give ACU a 57-56 lead and it appeared as though the Wildcats would escape with the victory.

But on the inbounds pass, Eddie Thompson was whistled for a holding foul without any time running off the clock, sending Eiland to the line with a chance to tie the game or give Cameron the victory.  He calmly sank both free throws to put Cameron in the lead, and ACU never got a shot off as the Aggies walked out of the gym with the win.

Heiman led the Wildcats with 15 points, while Giordan Cole had his best game in an ACU uniform with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
