AUSTIN – The ACU women's basketball team will try to rebound from its season opening loss this weekend as they travel to Austin for the St. Edward's University Shootout.
On Monday the Wildcats (0-1) fell to St. Mary's 66-69 in a matchup of regional opponents. Led by Jamie Meyer who scored 22 and pulled down eight rebounds, ACU was not able to overcome 25 turnovers in the loss. However, despite the turnovers the Wildcats found themselves down by three with less the 15 seconds in the game and a chance to tie. The Rattlers chased down the errant pass, but missed the game clinching layup. That allowed Kat Kundmueller a three-quarter-length shot as time expired and fell short.
Opening the tournament ACU will take on the host St. Edward's (0-1) who is also coming off a loss. The Hilltoppers fell to Angelo State in overtime on Monday. The Hilltoppers had three players in double digits with Sophia Holguin leading the way with 20. St. Edward's trailed most of the first half, but came on in the second period to lead until the final 2:10 of the regulation. A 13-1 run to start overtime was too much to overcome as Angelo State won 76-64.
Finishing out the tournament the Wildcats face Incarnate Word also of the Heartland Conference on Saturday. The Cardinals also fell to a Lone Star Conference foe on Sunday as West Texas A&M took advantage of 27 turnovers for the win. Nia Torru recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds as Hayley Harvey lead the Cardinals with 18 points in the loss.
Both matches this weekend are important early season games with implications on regional standings. The Cardinals also reached the NCAA Division II South Central Region Tournament a year ago falling in the first round. Last season the Wildcats lost both meetings with St. Edward's while splitting two games with Incarnate Word.
