ABILENE – Led by
Shawna Hines and Laruen Leone the Wildcats made DIG PINK a victorious one Tuesday night at Moody Coliseum. Hines who leads NCAA Division II in blocks was stellar at the net, but it was her hitting that helped the Wildcats defeat UT-Permian Basin 3-1.
Hines, a junior, hit .524 in the game recording 11 kills and six blocks. Leone added 12 kills and a block and hit .370 in the match. Sophomore
Jennie Hutt recorded her third double-double in four games and led all players with 14 kills and 17 digs.
The Wildcats cruised to 20-10 victory in the first set hitting .484 as a team and held UTPB to a .000 hitting percentage. At one juncture Leone served ACU to 11 straight points as the Wildcats scored 18 of the last four points. However the Wildcats faltered in the second set hitting -.040 and dropping the set 25-21.
The rest of the night belonged to the Wildcats as they flipped the percentages and held UTPB to a negative hitting percentage in the third set and .098 in the fourth. In the fourth set the Wildcats again started to roll as they outscored the Falcons 14-6 for the victory 25-18.
The non-conference win moves the Wildcats record to 23-5. With four games remaining the Wildcats are just three wins shy of last year's win total 26. ACU will take their final road swing to Oklahoma to take on East Central and Southeastern Oklahoma. The Wildcats are currently No. 7 in the South Central Region as the newest polls will be released Wednesday October 28.
DIG PINK night was also as success as fans filled Moody Coliseum with pink t-shirts. For those that did not come prepared shirts were sold as all profits went to The Side-Out Foundation.
The Side-Out Foundation has already raised $390,000 in 2009 with a goal of $1,000,000 by 2010. Any donations collected at the match will benefit the Side-Out Foundation, a national 501(c)(3) located in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area.
