ABILENE – The ACU volleyball team continued its strong play Tuesday night with a sweep of Dallas Baptist at Moody Coliseum. The Wildcats have continued to torch opponents with an undefeated home start and saw their record climb to 18-5 and 4-1 in a non-conference battle with the Lady Patriots who fell to 10-13.
Sophomore Jennie Hutt led the Wildcats with 13 kills and hit a cool .423 while adding eight digs. With those kills she is only 13 behind team leader Jordan Schilling and puts her over 200 for the season.
Junior Ijeoma Moronu was also solid for the Wildcats as she added another 33 assists. Moronu was also excellent at the net as she did not record an error in 13 attempts and added seven kills just one shy of her season high.
The Wildcats started hot as they hit a blistery .471 in the first set, disposing of the Lady Patriots 25-14. ACU then staved off a DBU rally taking the second set 25-21.
It was the third set that the Wildcats found themselves behind. However they were able to capitalize on 10 DBU errors after a kill by May Allen put the Lady Patriots up 24-23. The NCAA Division II leader in blocks, Shawna Hines, followed a Jorden Sliva kill with only her second block of the game to put the Wildcats on top 25-24. ACU finished off DBU as they committed their tenth error giving the Wildcats a 27-25 victory.
This week will be the début of the first NCAA Division II South Central region poll, which will eventually determine the regional tournament field.
ACU will return to conference action this weekend as they travel to Oklahoma to take on a pair of LSC North foes with Central Oklahoma on Thursday and SW Oklahoma State on Saturday.
