ACU to retire Perkins' jersey

ABILENE -- The ACU athletics department will honor the late Johnny Perkins by retiring his number during a ceremony at ACU's first home football game, Sept. 15 against Southeastern Oklahoma State at Shotwell Stadium.

Perkins -- who passed away last April 25 after suffering complications from heart surgery -- wore No. 44 during his days as an all-America wide receiver at ACU (1974-76).  Perkins is the fourth athlete in ACU history to have a jersey number retired, following Wilbert Montgomery (running back, No. 28), Jennifer Clarkson-Frazier (women's basketball, No. 25), and Jim Lindsey (quarterback, No. 10).

ACU senior defensive lineman Joe Edwards currently wears No. 44, but he will be the last Wildcat football player to ever wear that number.
