ACU to host 1995-96 reunion
ACU set to celebrate 31-2 finish of 1995-96 team
ABILENE -- The ACU Athletics Department is hosting the 10-year reunion of the 1995-96 women's basketball team that advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight and finished third in the nation.
The reunion is set for Saturday, Feb. 25, and will coincide with the Wildcats' final regular-season game of the season, a 4 p.m. contest against Texas Woman's at Moody Coliseum.
Former assistant coach Deonna Shake is organizing the reunion, and she said almost every member of the team -- coaches, players, trainers, managers -- have committed to returning to Abilene for the reunion. The head coach of that team, Suzanne Fox, is now the head coach Texas State and won't be present, but she is sending a greeting via video.
The 1995-96 team featured NCAA Division II Player of the Year Jennifer Clarkson, as well as all-region performer Caroline Omamo, Shalonda Bowden and shot-blocking center Aukse Steponaviciute. The latter is now an assistant at West Virginia, but will be flying to Abilene for the reunion.
During halftime of that afternoon's game, each member of the team will be introduced by former ACU director of athletics Stan Lambert, who will serve as the emcee for the ceremony. A video greeting from Fox will be shown at halftime, as well as a short highlight video from the season.
After the Wildcats' game is over, the members of the 1995-96 team will go to the Teague Special Events Center for a come-and-go reception that is open to the public.
