KINGSTON, Okla. -- The ACU Wildcats finished second Tuesday at the Texoma Match Play Championship, falling 5 1/2-3 1/2 to Central Oklahoma in the championship match at Chickasaw Pointe Golf Course.
The Wildcats had advanced to the championship match with a pair of easy wins on Monday over Southeastern Oklahoma State (7-2) and West Texas A&M 7 1/2-1 1/2. But the Wildcats -- ranked No. 25 in the nation in the latest national poll -- couldn't overtake the Bronchos after falling behind 2-1 in the match after the Four-Ball portion of the finale.
In singles play, Mitch Boles knocked off ACU's
Hugues Joannes at No. 1, 1-up in an even match that went all 18 holtes. At No. 2,
Patrick Hanauer picked up a point for ACU with a 2-and-1 win over Colby Shrum. Central Oklahoma's Chance Tatum and
Curtis Harris halved their match at No. 3.
Central Oklahoma won at Nos. 4 and 5 singles with Cooper Barrick and Matt Ellis beating
Kyle Byerly and
Erik Manning, respectively, before
Stephen Knight beat Ryan Sutton 3-and-1 at No. 6 singles.
Earlier in the Four Ball matches, Joannes and Hanauer beat Boles and Shrum 1-up to give ACU an early lead, but the Bronchos stormed back to win the final two Four Ball matches by identical 2-up scores.
