Wildcats impressive in 3-0 sweep
ACU runs crossover tournament record to 17-1
ABILENE – The ACU Wildcats finished off an impressive 3-0 run through the Lone Star Conference Crossover Tournament on Saturday, knocking off both Southeastern Oklahoma State and Cameron in three games each.
The Wildcats are 14-5 on the season and have won eight straight matches heading into Thursday night's LSC South Division opener against long-time nemesis West Texas A&M. The Wildcats and Lady Buffs will get started at 7 p.m. at Moody Coliseum
ACU's three wins over the weekend push its all-time record in the crossover tournament to 17-1 with the only loss coming two years ago against Central Oklahoma.
The Wildcats had little trouble in knocking off the Savages in their first match, winning 30-15, 30-22, 30-16. ACU then put away Cameron, 30-19, 30-27, 30-13, in their finale in the tournament.
The Cameron match, however, wasn't the breeze the score would seem to indicate as the Lady Aggies dropped the first game, but then rallied in the second game. Cameron eventually pulled out to a 24-17 lead before the ACU comeback began. The Wildcats reeled of three straight points before Morgan Meyer kill made it 25-20.
But kills by Callie Delabano, Ashlee Motola and Sophia Kindred gave ACU a 26-25 lead that it would not relinquish. Kills by Motola and Michelle Bernhardt finished off the game, giving ACU a 2-0 lead. After the teams see-sawed back and forth early in the third game, the Wildcats reeled off an 11-1 run that took the score from 9-8 to 20-9 and put ACU firmly in control.
Bernhardt led the Wildcats with 17 kills, while Motola had 12 and Slate 11. Junior setter Lindsey Martin had 42 assists and 20 digs.
In the three-game win over Southeastern Oklahoma State, Bernhardt had 16 kills, while Slate had 14 kills.
