Wildcats snap three-game skid
Lineup change sparks ACU to 23-point win over Lady Lions
COMMERCE – ACU head coach Wayne Williams shook up his starting lineup Thursday night and it paid off as the Wildcats snapped a three-game losing streak with a 76-53 win over Texas A&M-Commerce in a Lone Star Conference South Division game at the TAMC Fieldhouse.
The Wildcats' victory snaps a skid that saw them fall to 10-10 overall and 1-4 in the LSC South. Thursday's win, though, pushes the Wildcats to 11-10 and 2-4 with Saturday's 2 p.m. game at Texas A&M-Kingsville looming. The Lady Lions, meanwhile, fall to 6-14 and 2-5 with their seventh loss in eight games.
Sophomore Meredith Doyle started in place of Jodi Hellums, while freshman Ashley King moved from shooting guard to point guard. The move worked for Williams, who saw his team burst out to a 12-2 lead and was never threatened by the Lady Lions.
King buried a pair of 3-pointers early in the game, and Doyle's energy seemed to spark the Wildcats, who hit 8 of their first 10 shots from the field. ACU built its lead to 17 points at halftime (43-26), thanks to 17 of 27 shooting from the field (63.0 percent), including 5 of 8 from 3-point range.
Doyle was seemingly all over the court, scoring 11 points, picking up seven rebounds, dishing out five assists and picking up three steals. Junior forward Lynsie Blau continued her strong play by scoring 17 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
Junior all-America center Melanie Carter had 14 points and seven re bounds, while King had 14 points with nine coming from behind the 3-point arc.
