ACU whips Eastern New Mexico
Wildcats pick up first LSC South win, 73-56
ABILENE -- ACU used a late 10-0 run Thursday night to key a 73-56 win over Eastern New Mexico in a Lone Star Conference South Division game.
The victory pushed the Wildcats to 10-7 overall and 1-1 in the LSC South, while the Zias fell to 3-11 and 0-1.
ACU -- which will host rival West Texas A&M at 4 p.m. Saturday -- overcame 29 turnovers to pick up the win, its seventh in its last eight games. Melanie Carter scored 15 second-half points and led all scorers with 17 points while pulling down seven rebounds. Lynsie Blau had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
ACU led by 17 (57-50) with 8:05 to play before the Zias began whittling away at the lead. ENMU eventually got the lead down to 58-51 with 5:49 to play after an Elizabeth Richards cut the Zias' deficit to just seven points.
However, the Wildcats responded with a quick 10-0 run to regain a 68-51 lead. Freshman Ashley King had five points in the run, while Carter had four and Stephanie Riles one. King put the final touches on the run with a pair of free throws with 2:20 to play.
The Zias would not get closer than 13 points the rest of the way.
Laci Lee led Eastern New Mexico with 12 points, followed by Valencia Rollins with 10. King had nine points for the Wildcats, as did Meredith Doyle. Shara Helmbeck had a pair of big 3-pointers in the first half and finished with seven points.
