ACU rallies for 5th straight win
Wildcats knock off Lady Bulldogs, 68-65, to improve to 8-6
WEATHERFORD, Okla. – ACU rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit Saturday afternoon to take a 68-65 win over Southwestern Oklahoma State in a Lone Star Conference crossover game at Rankin Williams Fieldhouse.
The win is the fifth straight for the Wildcats, who are now 8-6 overall going into Tuesday night's Lone Star Conference South Division opener against LSC South Division pre-season favorite Angelo State. The Wildcats and 14th-ranked Rambelles – who suffered their first loss of the season Saturday at Cameron – are scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m. in Moody Coliseum.
Southwestern Oklahoma jumped out to a 9-0 lead and maintained its lead throughout the first half, taking a 36-28 advantage into the lockerroom. ACU wasted little time getting back into the ballgame, opening the second half with a 9-2 run of its own to cut the lead to 38-37 on a Jackie Vinson 3-pointer with 15:31 to play.
After getting the game tied again at 51-51 with 9:57 left on another Vinson 3-pointer, the Wildcats took their first lead of the game with 9:10 to play on a 3-pointer by Jenny Jackson.
ACU was able to maintain the lead most of the rest of the way, building as much as a five-point lead (66-61) on an offensive rebound and putback by Meredith Doyle with 1:28 to go.
After the Lady Bulldogs (5-8) cut the lead to 66-65 with seven seconds left, freshman Ashley King coolly nailed a pair of free throws for the final margin.
Melanie Carter led all scorers with 25 points for ACU, and Doyle had 11.
