Sophomore guard knocks down pair of clutch charity shots in 73-70 win
Box scorePORTALES, N.M. -- ACU sophomore guard Jenny Jackson scored 11 points Thursday night, but none were bigger than her two free throws with 5.1 seconds left that sealed ACU's 73-70 win over Eastern New Mexico in a Lone Star Conference South Division game at Greyhound Arena.
ACU, which led throughout the contest, saw its lead whittled to one point on severall occasions in the second half, but it never lost either its composure or the lead. The Greyhounds were able to cut the lead to 71-70 with seven seconds left, but were forced to foul Jackson on the inbounds pass.
The sophomore from Spring went to the line and calmly sank both free throws to give the Wildcats their winning margin.
The Zias had a shot at the buzzer to tie the game, but Jill Stout's long-range 3-pointer banged off the side of the backboard.
ACU picked up 23 points and eight rebounds from Melanie Carter, while Brenda Jacoby added 15 and Jackson had 11 for ACU, which improved to 2-2 in LSC play and 7-9 overall.
The Wildcats will return to action Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader
against arch-rival West Texas A&M in Canyon. The women's game will get
underway at 5 p.m. and will be the first game in the new WTAM Events Center.
