In a memorable performance, Billy Olson interrupts his bid for a world record in the pole vault to run the 100 meters (he was fifth in 10.79) to help the Wildcats win their third straight Lone Star Conference track and field title in San Angelo. ACU scores 170 points to 151 for the runner-up Rams of Angelo State. Olson later cleared 18-7.50 the third-highest vault in world history.
