Head coach Wally Bullington's team wins the first of two NAIA Division I national football championships with a 42-14 win over Elon College in the Champion Bowl in Shreveport La. During the season the Wildcats outscored opponents 466-206 and the defense had a string of 11 straight shutout quarters. The team set 16 Wildcat records, nine of which still stand.
