Wildcats Win Sixth Straight

ABILENE – The Wildcats extended their winning streak to six games as they picked up a one-run win over University of the Southwest, 4-3 on Monday afternoon at Crutcher Scott Field in non-conference action.
ACU will close out a nine-game homestand this weekend as they host Angelo State. The Wildcats won their sixth straight sweeping University of the Southwest and taking a four-game series from Texas A&M-International over the weekend.
Will Calhoun picked up his fourth win of the season for ACU going six strong innings of five hit baseball. Calhoun allowed two runs and struck out two in only his third start of the season. Kris Carlson enter in the eighth for a two-inning save, his sixth of the season.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead early as Aaron Oliver led off with a single and moved to second on a Cameron Bankston walk. After Calhoun reached on a fielder's choice, Oliver would score when a failed pick-off attempt of Calhoun dribbled away from the first baseman allowing Oliver to race home.
The Mustang offense roughed up the Wildcat pitching all weekend with 18 hits in two games. USW would tie the game in the second inning on a Josh Cappello double and take the lead in the third inning on a home run to left field from Darrell Owens.
Just as they did all weekend ACU would get timely hitting to rally back in the fourth. A walk and a Mustang error would bring Ryan Luckie to the plate who blasted a triple into right center scoring Abe Williams and Ian Tomkins. Oliver would single up the middle off the mound to score Luckie and give ACU a, 4-2 lead.
USW would add a run in the eighth, when a lead-off walk to Ysidoro Renya allowed him to come around and score on a Shane Vizcaino single.
ACU and Angelo State begin their three game Lone Star Conference series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Both teams will play a double header on Saturday afternoon with a first pitch scheduled for 2:05 p.m. at Crutcher Scott Field.
