Jones posts automatic marks


ABILENE -- ACU sophomore thrower Nick Jones posted automatic qualifying marks in two events Thursday at the ACU Triangular Track and Field Meet, leading a group of four Wildcats who qualified automatically for the NCAA Division II outdoor championship meet.

ACU was hosting its first track and field meet of the season and was competing against both Texas Tech and Oral Roberts University. The Wildcats will return to the track next weekend at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin.

Jones -- the defending national champion in the discus throw -- won both the shot put and discus throw and posted automatic qualifying marks in both events. He won the discus Thursday at Elmer Gray Stadium with an automatic qualifying mark of 177 feet, 11 inches (54.22 meters), and later in the day he won the shot put with an automatic qualifying mark of 55-9.25 (17.00 meters).

Also posting automatic qualifying marks for the Wildcats were Desmond Jackson (100 metrs), Stephen Toler (pole vault) and Paige Newby (women's discus throw).

Jackson won the 100 meters with a qualifying mark of 10.43 seconds, while Toler won the pole vault with a mark of 17-0.75. Newby finished second in the discus with an automatic qualifying mark of 164-0 (49.98 meters).

ACU also had three athletes and one relay post provisional qualifying marks, led by Ramon Sparks in both the men's long jump and triple jump. He won both events, posting a mark of 24-3.0 (7.39 meters) in the long jump and 48-7.25 (14.81 meters) in the triple jump. The men's 4x400 relay of Regi McCabe-Gossett, Jordan Johnson, Desmond Jackson and Harold Jackson won the event with a provisional time of 3:13.16, and Cory Altenberg provisionally qualified in the pole vault with a second-place finish and qualifying mark of 16-6.75.

On the women's side, Kim Prather won the 400 meters with a provisional time of 55.47 seconds, and Callie Young finished third in the pole vault, bettering her previous provisional mark by clearing 12-1.50. Amanda Clemons also provisionally qualified in the triple jump by winning the event with a mark of 39-0.25 (11.89 meters)
