Biography

Listed as one of the Wildcats’ starting defensive ends going into the 2009 season. 

2009 (Track and Field, sophomore):  Jones repeated as the NCAA Division II national champion in the discus, winning in dramatic fashion on the final throw of the competition to win his second straight national championship in the discus.  He was also fifth in the shot put at the national championship meet.  He also won Lone Star Conference championships in  the shot put (55 feet, 6.25 inches) and discus (183-6).  He was seventh in the shot put at the NCAA Division II indoor championships meet in mid-March. 

2008 (Football, redshirt freshman):  Backup defensive lineman on Wildcat team that reached quarterfinals with top national ranking of second. Had 19 tackles (11 solo), 2.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 QB sacks and 2 fumble recoveries. Had 2 tackles, 1 sack and 1 fumble recovery in narrow QF loss to Northwest Missouri State. ACU

2008 (Track and Field, freshman):  Shocked the field by winning the NCAA II individual national championship in the discus at the outdoor championship meet in Walnut, Calif., last May.  On his final throw of the preliminary round, Jones unleashed a personal-best throw of 186 feet, 11 inches, and that throw stood up as the best throw through the final three rounds of the competition.  Jones also captured the Lone Star Conference championship in the discus with a throw of 174-10.00.  His best mark in the shot put was 53-3.75, which was a first-place mark at the ACU Twilight Open on May 8.  He was fourth at the LSC championship meet in the shot put with a mark of 51-3.00. 

High school:  Jones was one of the top defensive players in the Panhandle in 2006, helping Tascosa HS advance to the Class 5A state playoffs for the first time since 1997.  In the regular season, Jones finished with 73 tackles, 11 sacks, one fumble recovery, one interception and six quarterback hurries.  He was a unanimous all-District 2-5A selection and was a second team all-state selection by the Associated Press.  Jones was an honorable mention all-state selection by the Texas Sports Writers Association.  He was also a first team all-Region I-5A selection by  .  As a thrower in track and field, Jones might have been the best thrower in the state the last two years.  As a senior at the Class 5A state meet, he won the Class 5A shot put with a mark of 59-8.25 and finished the season ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 14 in the nation in the event.  He had a high school best of 62-10.00 in the event.  As a junior in track and field, he competed in the shot put in 10 meets, finishing first six times and second three times, capping his season with a third-place finish at the UIL state meet.
