Biography

 

Schmitt is the Wildcat’s quiet leader, and he returns to his spot behind the plate and in the middle of the batting order.  He was able to platoon with Alec Sowards last season (playing right field when Sowards caught)_in order to save his knees, but Schmitt will likely catch at least 50 games during the 2008 regular season. 2007 (Sophomore):  Schmitt led the Wildcats with in home runs with nine and RBI_with 52.  He was in the Lone Star Conference’s top 10 in home runs and RBI_while hitting .361 on the season.  Schmitt had 19 multi-hit games during the season, including a season-best four hits in a March 2 comeback win over Southestern Oklahoma State.  In that win over the Savage Storm, Schmitt was 4 for 5 with three runs scored and one RBI.  Schmitt had a career-best five RBI_in an April 8 loss against Angelo State, and he had four more in the Wiildcats’ 12-0 win over Southwestern Oklahoma State on May 6 in the Lone Star Conference Post-Season Tournament.  Schmitt went on to earn all-LSC_South Division first team honors, and was also voted second team academic all-District VI_by ESPN_The Magazine and CoSIDA.  2006 (Freshman):  Played in 50 games with 47 starts as a freshman.  Started 35 games behind the plate and threw out 18 of 43 baserunners.  Hit .307 with one home run and 25 RBI.  Had four three-hit games, including against Lone Star Conference South Division foes Angelo State (April 7) and Eastern New Mexico (April 21).  Posted eight two-RBI_games, including against LSC_South Division opponents Tarleton State (March 31 and April 1) and Texas A&M-Kingsville (April 14).  High school:  Schmitt was one of the top offensive players in the Metroplex in 2005, earning second team Dallas Morning-News all-area team honors.  Schmitt hit .427 with a school-record 19 doubles, six home runs and 35 RBI while slugging at an .865 clip.  Schmitt won the District 10-5A Triple Crown, leading the circuit in batting average, home runs and RBI.  He was sixth in the Metroplex in RBI_in 2005 and was also seventh in the Metroplex in home runs.  Lake Highlands finished 27-3-1 in 2005 and was one of the top-ranked teams in the Dallas Morning-News poll all season.  A first team all-district player in 2005, he was also the district’s Offensive Player of the Year.  He led Lake Highlands to a 24-12 record his junior year in 2004 and was a second team all-District 9-5A pick.  Personal:  Born 26 December 1986.  2005 graduate of Lake Highlands High School.
