ABILENE - The ACU women's tennis team will head into the Western Athletic Conference tournament with momentum and good vibes following a 4-1 Senior Day win over Tarleton State on Saturday afternoon.
Eva Arranz, one of the Wildcats' two seniors, provided the match-clinching victory by coming back to defeat her opponent at No. 6 singles in three sets.
Arranz went down 4-6 in the opening set, but battled to win the second set 7-6 with a 7-4 tiebreaker. The Spaniard then dominated the third and final set, 6-0.
Tarleton took the doubles point by winning at the first and second lines. At No. 1 singles, ACU's
Masha Vrsalovic earned a straight-set win to tie the team match at 1-1.
Maria Cascos was close behind with a sweep at the No. 4 position, followed by
Alice Klinteby who sunked her opponent in a third set to win 6-4, 6-7 [1-7], 6-0.
Cascos has now won five straight singles matches -- all at No. 4 -- with victories against Louisiana Tech, UT Arlington (twice), Grand Canyon, and Saturday's over Tarleton. All five have been in straight sets.
The Wildcats finish the regular season with a 5-12 record, but 3-1 against WAC teams. The WAC Team Tennis Championships will be played at the UTA Tennis Center in Arlington beginning with the quarterfinal round on Thursday, April 17 at 11 a.m.
