COLLEGE STATION – No. 19 Baylor scored five runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth Thursday afternoon to turn a narrow 3-2 lead over ACU into a 10-2 win in the season-opener for both teams at Davis Stadium in the Aggie Classic on the campus of Texas A&M University.
Baylor led 3-0 after two innings before the Wildcats scored two runs in the third to cut the Lady Bears' lead to 3-2. With one out and Miranda Lista on second, Bubba Rote reached on an error by Baylor pitcher Lexie Warncke. Lista advanced to third on the ground ball and scored on the error, cutting the Baylor lead to 3-1.
Later in the inning, Rote scored from third on a two-out single by Taylor Haywood, cutting the Baylor advantage to 3-2.
But Baylor put up a five spot in the bottom of the third with three f the runs scoring on an error by Lista at shortstop and back-to-back bases-loaded hit batters by Taylor Bachmeyer that drove in two more runs for the Lady Bears. Leading 8-2, Baylor tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning, and Warncke shut down the Wildcats in the top of the fifth to end the game on the 8-run rule.
The Wildcats are back in action Friday at 9 a.m. against Utah State and again at 2 p.m. against Villanova. They will close out tournament play Saturday at 4:30 p.m. against seventh-ranked Texas A&M.
