ABILENE – The ACU Wildcats played to their fifth season tie on Senior Day, holding North Texas to a scoreless draw at Elmer Gray Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Despite the lack of goals, the match was an intense contest with plenty of action on both sides of the pitch.
The Wildcats (2-1-5) showcased a strong defensive effort, with goalkeeper
Savanna Alba recording an impressive eight saves, helping her team secure their third shutout of the season. ACU had a higher possession rate, controlling 60% of the match and outshooting North Texas 21-19.
"We knew playing against a top 50 opponent in UNT would be tough and I am proud of their fight today on Senior Day," head coach
Stephen Salas said., "Our defense was outstanding with two goal-line clearances and Savanna stepping up to make big-time saves. To keep one of the highest scoring teams in the nation off the board was well earned."
ACU's best scoring opportunities came in the second half, including a penalty kick attempt by senior
Hannah Martin that was saved by the North Texas goalkeeper. Several other Wildcats, including
Peyton Hill and
Taylor Sarver, tested the Mean Green defense throughout the match, forcing North Texas to make nine saves in total.
"We keep creating more and more quality chances," said Salas. "It's coming and UNT made it tough with some big-time saves. I was specifically impressed with our second half, which created many chances and shots on goal that forced their GK to make some huge saves."
On the attack, ACU took advantage of corner kicks, earning 10 throughout the match. However, despite the pressure, they were unable to find the back of the net.
Sunday's game marked a special occasion as ACU celebrated its seniors, who have been integral to the team's success this season.
Savanna Alba,
Hannah Gage,
Chayse Thorn,
Taylor Sarver,
Macie Stephens and
Malia Cerdon were celebrated in a senior ceremony before the game and were able to push it to the limit when game time hit.
"We are going to do great things this season and this team has come a long way," Salas said. "There's so much more in store and today was a great way to honor our seniors."
