ABILENE – Abilene Christian picked up a big win on Sunday, taking down Texas-Arlington 5-1.
Lina Russo scattered five hits and allowed only an unearned run while striking out five for her sixth win of the season.
The Wildcats got the game started well in the first inning with a big play at the plate on defense and two home runs in the home half.
Catrin Hoffman fielded a base hit in left field and fired a strike home just in time for
Avery Miloch to apply the tag before Camille Corona's foot reached the plate.
In the bottom of the first,
Olivia Marble walked and scored on
Sammie Shelander's two-run home run for a 2-0 lead. Miloch followed a batter later with a solo home run – her sixth round-tripper of the season.
Hoffman had an RBI single to center and
Riley White singled home
Bubba Rote in the third for a 5-0 lead.
UTA scored its lone run in the fourth.
Corona got a lead-off single in the sixth but Shelander turned in an unassisted double play, snagging a line drive and tagging the base while Corona tried to hurry back.
ACU had nine hits in the game, led by
Kaydee Bennett with three and Miloch with two. Shelander, White, Hoffman and
Skylar Padgett each added a single.
The Wildcats play their final home series next weekend when California Baptist visits, beginning with a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Friday.
