ABILENE - The ACU Wildcats delivered a dominant performance at Moody Coliseum, overpowering Howard Payne University in a 108-35 victory that showcased their depth, efficiency, and relentless energy. With six players scoring in double digits, ACU's offense reached new heights, while their defense suffocated the Yellow Jackets, holding them to just 35 points.
The Wildcats came out firing, building a commanding 26-14 lead after the first quarter and extending their dominance as the game progressed. A massive third-quarter surge saw ACU pour in 35 points, stretching their lead to an insurmountable 82-30. Their defensive pressure was equally impressive, forcing 27 turnovers and turning those into 44 points.
Sophomore guard Payton Hull led the offensive charge with 19 points, including a sharp 5-for-9 display from three-point range. Bella Earle anchored the interior, notching a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds, while also dishing out five assists. Emma Troxell and Breanna Davis added 14 and 13 points, respectively, combining for seven offensive rebounds that kept the Wildcats' attack humming. Erin Woodson and Paula Pique rounded out the scoring leaders, contributing 10 and 11 points each.
ACU dominated in nearly every statistical category. The Wildcats outscored the Yellow Jackets 52-12 in the paint and 38-2 on second-chance opportunities, thanks to a 57-19 rebounding advantage. Their bench also provided a spark, adding 45 points compared to Howard Payne's four.
With the win, ACU improved to 8-4 on the season and will look to build on this momentum as they head out to their second tournament in 2024 in New Mexico. In Albuquerque, The Wildcats will face off against Sacramento State once again on Friday, and end with the University of New Mexico on Saturday. The Wildcats and the Lobos have not seen each other since their first meeting in 2022, where New Mexico took the slight victory.
After Christmas, ACU will return to Moody for their final non-conference showdown against Nelson University.
