Wildcats' Comeback Attempts Fall Short vs. Lady Toppers

Emma Troxell earns first career double-double

ABILENE - The ACU women's basketball team climbed out of a big hole to force some tense moments near the game's end, but could not deliver the deciding punch in a 68-64 loss against Western Kentucky on Thursday night.

Payton Hull bounced back from an off-night at Texas Tech on Tuesday to lead the Wildcats with a season-high 27 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field.

Sophomore Emma Troxell secured her first career double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Troxell rarely came off the floor, leading ACU with 38 minutes played.

The loss drops the Wildcats to 2-4 this season.

KEY POINTS
  • After ACU scored the first two points of the game, Western Kentucky rolled off 13 straight behind a furious full-court press that forced the Wildcats into 12 turnovers in the opening three minutes.
  • ACU shot 50% FG from the second quarter on, and trimmed its deficit to four entering the fourth quarter.
  • Mia Rivers completed an and-1 with 1:04 to play pulling ACU within five.
  • Bella Earle then stole the ball and Hull nailed a 3-pointer with 0:33 remaining to make the score 66-64 in favor of WKU.
  • The Lady Toppers ran down most of the shot clock and grabbed an offensive rebound which forced the Wildcats to foul. Josie Gilvin sank both free throws to put the game on ice.

NEXT UP

ACU plays old Southland Conference rival Incarnate Word on Sunday at 2 p.m. in San Antonio.

It begins a stretch of four straight road games.

The Wildcats will play play two games in the FIU Thanksgiving Classic in Miami, and travel to UTRGV before playing their next home contest on Saturday, Dec. 7 against East Texas A&M (formerly known as Texas A&M-Commerce).
