EDINBURGH – Abilene Christian's defense limited Texas-Rio Grande Valley to a single shot on goal but the Vaqueros made it count for a 1-0 win over the Wildcats Thursday in both team's WAC opener.
Â
After a scoreless first half, Linnea Eld scored in the 52nd minute for the final margin. UTRGV had only six shots for the game.
Â
"This was some of the best possession and ball movement we've had all season," said ACU Head Coach Stephen Salas. "It was a tough loss to where we let the game be decided by a free kick against the run of play. We were the aggressor for most of the game, but we have to make the most of our opportunities and timing. A lot of great moments that we were proud of the team for. We will respond."
Â
ACU put up 10 shots, including two in the final two minutes, but couldn't find the net.
Chayse Thorn tested the Vaquero keeper twice and
Hannah Martin had a shot on goal as well, but couldn't capitalize.
Â
The loss drops the Wildcats to 5-4-1 overall and 0-1 in the WAC. ACU gets back to action Sunday at 1 p.m. at Stephen F. Austin. SFA
