Morgan dominates, ACU wins opener at Lamar

BEAUMONT, Texas – Sophomore Tyler Morgan had the best outing of his career on the mound, Mitchell Dickson and Grayson Tatrow each drove in two runs, and the ACU baseball team picked up its third-straight win Friday night at Lamar. The Wildcats (14-11, 6-4 WAC) trailed 2-1 early, but came back to tie it in the sixth inning, and scored four in the seventh to pull away, 6-3, to jump into a tie with the Cardinals (15-11, 6-4 WAC) for second place in the WAC Southwest Division.

How It Happened
- Dickson homered to left field on the second pitch of the game off of Lamar starter Braxton Douthit to give the 'Cats a 1-0 lead.
- Lamar would respond in the home first, scoring a pair of runs on a pair of sacrifice flies to lead 2-1. Once Morgan settled in, however, the right-hander dealt.
- Both pitchers settled in well. Morgan and Douthit cruised through the fifth inning, with neither allowing a run for four innings. That changed in the sixth.
- Tatrow singled to lead off the sixth, putting the tying run on. After a pair of strikeouts, Miller Ladusau tied the game with an rbi-double down the left-field line. It was a new game heading to the seventh.
- ACU not only took the lead, but blew it open with a four-run frame. The 'Cats loaded the bases with no one out, and then Dickson gave ACU the lead after grounding out to short to score Alexei Cazarin, who pinch ran for Bryson Hill.
- Tatrow then doubled into right field to score Hunter Gieser and Brett Hammit, and the Wildcats led 5-2.
- Colton Eager then answered with a double of his own to trade places with Tatrow, and the back-to-back two-baggers pushed the advantage to 6-2.
- Morgan got all the way with the eighth inning, where Sam Berberich took over. The right-hander allowed a solo home run in the ninth, but that was all as ACU held on, 6-3.

Stat Pack
- Morgan was the highlight of the game. The sophomore had the longest outing of the year, tossing 7.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits with three strikeouts.
- The top three in the order, Dickson, Tatrow, and Eager, were spectacular. Dickson and Tatrow each had two hits and two RBI, while Eager drove in one with his lone hit.
- Dickson's homer was his second of the season.
- Ladusau tallied a two-hit night, while Hill, Gieser, and Aaron Staehely each had a knock.
- Berberich went 1.1 out of the bullpen, allowing one run on one hit with one punch out.

Beyond the Box Score
- Morgan's outing was the longest by a starting pitcher this season, and the longest by a Wildcat since Spencer Chirpich went 8.2 innings at Sam Houston on May 16, 2021.
- Dickson had not homered since the March 5 against Marist, a span of 15 games.
- Morgan threw 104 pitches, the second-highest total of his career; the righty threw 107 pitches against Northwestern State exactly one year ago, on April 1, 2021.

Up Next
- Saturday's game two starts at 2 p.m., and Sunday's finale begins at 1 p.m.
