A dominating defensive performance leads ACU over Troy

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The Wildcats got out to a hot-shooting start and never looked back as they opened the Collegiate Basketball Invitational (CBI) with an 82-70 win over the Troy Trojans. Four Wildcats scored in double figures, led by Coryon Mason with 19 and Cameron Steele with 18, and the team scored 27 points off of turnovers on their way to the first-round win.  

Key Plays
  • The Wildcats were hot from deep early in the game hitting three early threes to take a 9-7 lead through the first three minutes of play.
  • A steal by Reggie Miller and the feed to Mahki Morris on the break pushed the Wildcats lead to 11-7 at the first media timeout.
  • Coryon Mason gave the Wildcats their first double-digit lead with a driving layup off a feed from Airion Simmons with just over seven minutes gone in the first half.
  • A three from the Trojans cut the Wildcats lead to six points with three and a half minutes to go in the first half.  
  • Cameron Steele and Mahki Morris combined to hit three threes over three possessions for the Wildcats that kickstarted a 17-2 run to end the first half.
  • Simmons finished two tough buckets over four possessions to keep the Wildcats lead in double figures at the 12:17 mark of the second half.
  • Steele found an open Mason on the wing for a wide open three that pushed the ACU lead back to 19 points with eight and half minutes to play.
  • With a lineup of reserves on the court for the Wildcats, the Trojans went on a 10-4 run to get within 12 late, but the veterans returned to the court to secure the 82-70 win.

  • The Wildcats forced 20 turnovers and scored 27 points off of those turnovers.
  • Cameron Steele went 4-5 from downtown to set a new career-high for threes made in a game.
  • Coryon Mason was an efficient 6-12 from the field on the way to 19 points to lead all scorers.
  • ACU won the rebounding battle 33-32, including having an 11-6 advantage on the offensive boards.
  • Tobias Cameron led the team with seven rebounds and also added four assists.
  • Damien Daniels dished out five assists on the night and went 2-3 from the field.
