Men's Basketball

New look Wildcats prep for year two of the Tanner era

ABILENE – The 2021-22 season was a rollercoaster for ACU men's basketball that included an 11-game win streak, a five-game losing streak in WAC play, and a four games in four days run to the WAC Championship game in Vegas. The Wildcats made a semifinal appearance in the CBI, falling to a 25-win Middle Tennessee team, and closed their season with a 25-11 record. Last season also marked the end of three storied careers, as the veteran backcourt of Reggie Miller, Mahki Morris, and Coryon Mason completed their eligibility. Abilene Christian saw many faces from last season's squad depart and now return just eight players from last year as they look to compete against a tougher WAC slate.

All but one of the Wildcats' returning players saw playing time last season and most were major contributors to last year's success. The team brings back a familiar face in Joe Pleasant, 2021's March Madness hero, and adds much needed length on the wings with their freshman and transfers. Defense remains the centerpiece of the Brette Tanner game plan, but the biggest question will be who will step up to replace the lost scoring in the backcourt.

MOODY MAGIC RETURNS

Potentially the most anticipated part of the 2022-23 season is the Wildcats return to playing in Moody Coliseum after playing the last two seasons in the Teague Center. The men boasted an impressive 27-3 record in Teague over those two seasons and hope they can keep the home court advantage alive in Moody. The Wildcats have not had a losing season at home since the 2010-11 season and have compiled double-digit home wins in six of their 10 seasons since making the jump to Division I.

ROSTER OUTLOOK

This is probably the most roster turnover we have seen in my time here. We bring back a great group of core guys, but there are a lot of guys we have to get up to speed in our system. This group has worked really hard leading up to the season and they have a ton of potential.
Head coach Brette Tanner

RETURNERS

Of the eight returning players, seven saw action last season and six played a major role in the rotation. The group comprised about 60 percent of the team scoring a year ago and will need to find ways to fill the gaps left by the departure of their scoring backcourt.

Damien Daniels - Daniels is a fifth-year season who will run away with a number of ACU records by season's end. He has already played the most games in school history with 130 under his belt and the team will need that experience at the point. Damien led the team with 115 assists last season and was second with 68 steals and the Wildcats will need him to replicate those numbers to find success again this season.

Ja'Sean Jackson - Jackson worked his way into more and more playing time as the season went on last year and he showed his ability to be a high-level two-way player for the ‘Cats. The team will need him to make big strides going into season two as one of the few returning wings who has a whole season under their belt in coach Tanner’s system.

Cameron Steele - Steele had a breakout sophomore campaign, averaging nearly 10 points per game and hitting a team-leading 40 threes on the season. The Wildcats will have one of the most experienced front courts in the conference as they return all of their key interior players and Steele will be a huge part of that again this season.

Tobias Cameron - Cameron made a big jump last season transitioning from a bench role to a starting role mid-season. He has been a do-it-all type guard throughout his time with the Wildcats and he thrived in that role last season. He plays with a chip on his shoulder and brings energy and hustle every minute he is on the court.

Airion Simmons - Another player who made a big jump last season, Simmons earned his first all-conference recognition with his selection to the All-WAC second team and he was named to the preseason first team this fall. Airion led the team in scoring and rebounding during conference play and put up a ridiculous 31 points and 14 rebounds in a home win over UTRGV. The team will need the same level of production from him again this season and if he can do that, he will be in contention for Player of the Year.

Immanuel Allen - After suffering a season-ending injury during the 20-21 season, Allen came back with a bang last season including a game-tying three that allowed the Wildcats to secure their first win of the Tanner era in overtime. Allen's athleticism is off the charts and he should take a big jump this season as he looks like he is fully confident in his abilities on the court again. He will definitely have a chance to fill the scoring gap left by Mason and Morris.

Yuot Gai - Now in his second year with the Wildcats, Gai provides great length inside and has a chance to develop into a regular rotation player down low. While his 6-11 frame is thin, he has a great touch at the rim and can stretch outside with a three as well. If he can keep up on the defensive end, he will provide great rim protection and keep the bench deep for coach Tanner.

This group is a special one to me. We have been through so much together. NCAA Tournaments, COVID, coaching change and so on. I have ultimate trust in each one of them. It’s a great feeling as a coach when you have a group of players that you know exactly what you are going to get every day.

TRANSFERS

The Wildcats bring in a solid group of transfers who should all compete for regular minutes right away. A familiar face returns in Joe Pleasant but both Hunter Madden and Ali Dibba have the potential to be lethal scorers on the wing.

Hunter Jack Madden - Madden comes to the Wildcats as the lone JUCO transfer this year. He was at Otero College a year ago where he played for ACU assistant coach Ted Crass who ran a similar system to what the Wildcats have implemented under Tanner. Hunter gives the Wildcats a little more length on the perimeter and has the ability to put up a lot of points in a short period of time.

Ali Dibba - Dibba comes to ACU by way of Chicago State where he had limited action as a freshman due to an injury and early season travel restrictions. Ali played five games for the Cougars and garnered a Freshman of the Week honor in his first weekend of conference action before his injury. At 6-4 he will provide much needed size on the wing and could develop into a solid two-way player.

Joe Pleasant - Pleasant returns as a grad transfer for ACU after spending last season at Wichita State. Joe will make an immediate impact on the interior for ACU and should provide a great scoring punch that could help make up for lost scoring from last season's team. One of the biggest upsides for the Wildcats is his ability to guard nearly every position at a high level. If he can replicate his earlier successes in a Wildcat uniform, the ceiling is high for ACU.

This group of transfers is probably the most ready group that we have ever had to play. One played in the WAC, one played in the exact same system that we play while he was in Junior College and the other has actually played here. I am very excited and expect big things from this group.

FRESHMEN

The Wildcats brought in three true freshmen and have two redshirt freshmen who could each carve out some time on the court this season. The guards will bring athleticism and great scoring capability and if they can pick up the defense, they will earn themselves solid minutes as the season goes on.

Reese Miller - Miller is a 6-3 guard who can hit from deep at will. An injury in the offseason will likely keep him off the court this season, but his ceiling is high if he puts in the work on both ends of the court.

Leonardo Bettiol - Bettiol redshirted last season and will look to earn a spot in the rotation inside this year. Leo has a great touch around the rim and put in the work both last season and in the offseason to be able to keep up on the defensive end. He has a big 6-8 frame that could provide strength inside and much like the other bigs on the roster he can hit from deep as well.

Colby Tanner - After spending last season as a manager with the team, coach Tanner's son Colby earned himself a spot on the roster. Another smaller guard, he has great quickness and knows the game plan as well as anyone. He has a nice outside shot and isn't afraid to to take his scoring opportunities when he has them.

JV Seat - The Gatorade Player of the Year in Oklahoma a season ago, Seat has made an immediate impact in practice on both sides of the ball. JV gives the Wildcats another bigger guard at 6-3 and has the offensive skills to be a great player. If he can prove he can contribute on the defensive end, he will see his minutes increase as the season goes on.

Muodubem Muoneke - Muoneke may be one of the most athletically gifted players the Wildcats have had in recent years. His pure athleticism is off the charts. A big guard at 6-5, he also has great offensive tools but will need to make the jump defensively to find a place in the rotation in year one. He has a chance to make an impact as a freshman if he continues to get better as the year goes on.

All of our freshman are super talented kids. With the experience we have back it may take them awhile to really make their mark but I have no doubt each of them will be a great player for ACU in their own time.

MONDAY VS. JACKSON STATE

JACKSON STATE

This will be the first meeting between these two programs but it will not be an easy test to open the season on Monday. NBA All-Star Mo Williams is in his first year at the helm of the Tigers' program and he brought some great talent with him from Alabama State. The Tigers were selected to finish seventh in the SWAC, but Williams has put together a solid roster that also brings a tenacious effort on the defensive end. The team held opponents to just 64 points per game a season ago and will look to bring that same energy on opening night.

The team returns just four players from a season ago but a transfer-heavy roster means they will have good experience coming into the season. Gabe Watson played in just seven games for the Tigers last season due to injury, but he averaged nearly 15 points per game in those contests and could be an impact player on Monday night.

ABILENE CHRISTIAN

The Wildcats will once again rely on their defense as they open the season on Monday. The returning core of Daniels, Cameron, and Simmons will set the tone for ACU while we see who is ready to step into the holes left by Mason, Morris and Miller. Steele could make a major jump in his junior season on both ends of the court, but we will see who steps up offensively. Dibba and Madden both have the chance to be great scorers while Jackson could make an impact offensively as well.
