Wodka completes comeback with second GW goal this weekend

LUBBOCK, Texas — Wash. Rinse. Repeat. After trailing early Sunday afternoon, the Wildcat soccer team mounted a huge comeback to defeat Lubbock Christian, 3-2 in overtime. Natalie Wodka scored in the 99th minute to win it, her second goal of the game, her third of the weekend, and her second game-winner in extra minutes of the weekend. It was an impressive comeback from down 2-0, and ACU now moves to 2-0 in the spring and 4-2-1 for the season. Alyssia Anuat scored the equalizer late in the second half for ACU, who now travels back to Abilene to open conference play next weekend.

The Goals

  • 33' | LCU's Tegan Wilson scored the first of her two goals to get the scoring started.
  • 35' | Wilson scored again for LCU and the Lady Chaps led 2-0 at halftime.
  • 71' | The comeback began with a Natalie Wodka goal. The ball was headed by LCU out of the box off a corner, and Caylen Wright was there for it. A defender closed on her, she sent it to the right to Ellen Joss, who put the ball into the left side of the box for Wodka. The junior turned, gathered, and shot it across, left to right, through the back of the net for the score.
  • 81' | After another corner kick was headed out, Alyssia Anuat was right there for it, and rifled a missile from the top of the box into the upper right corner of the net for the equalizer.
  • 99' | Another corner kick started the chaos. After a couple deflections, Ellen Joss attempted a shot in the middle top of the box. The shot was pin-balled around, and an LCU defender tried to clear it, and it went to Wodka. She used her chest to knock the ball down, gathered herself, and placed the perfect ball towards the left side of the net past the keeper for the game-winner.

The Numbers

  • ACU was outshot 7-5 in the first half, but was absolutely dominant in the second half, holding a 16-3 edge in shots. ACU led 12-3 in shots on goal, and constantly put pressure on LCU in the final 55 minutes.
  • LCU led early in corner kicks as well, but it was all ACU in that category late. The Wildcats had five corners in the second half, and although they didn't directly lead to goals, set up the chain of events of the three scores. For the game, both teams recorded eight corners.
  • Jordan Michie and Alyssia Anuat led the way with five shot attempts, while Wodka tallied four.
  • Christina Arteaga recorded three shots, while Ellen Joss and Caylen Wright each had two. Arteaga was also the trigger on all but one corner in the game.
  • Erin Smith added one goal to her season total and got the win in net.

QUOTABLES

We learned a lot about the team today. As players come and go along with injuries we were trying to figure out how to use everyone most effectively. We found a way and I am proud of how they fought back.
Head Coach Casey Wilson
Today’s game was crazy no doubt, but I had so much faith in our team to come back from being down [2-0] at half[time]. In the second half, I thought we came out a lot stronger. We won a lot of tackles which brought so much energy to the team. We definitely fought hard today and it was the best feeling coming out on top today.
