ABILENE - Abilene Christian Sunday suffered a 7.0-inning 12-2 loss to New Mexico State, which salvaged the final game of a three-game series between future WAC rivals at Crutcher Scott Field.
The Wildcats dropped to 5-2 with the loss, while the Aggies improved to 1-2.
ACU appeared poised for the sweep early on as starting pitcher
Adam Stephenson struck out the side in the first (all swinging) on 15 pitches and
Colton Eager crushed a two-run home run to right field (390 feet), but the Aggies allowed only four more baserunners the rest of way while scored a dozen unanswered runs.
The visitors tied the score on a two-run home run by Jake Baer in the second and scored at least once from the fourth to seventh innings against four Wildcat pitchers.
In addition to Eager's round-tripper, the Wildcats also received doubles off the bats of
Tommy Cruz and
Brett Hammit, and a pair of singles from catcher
Harrison Caley.
The Wildcats return to action Tuesday at UT Arlington. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
